June 2015
Dear First Grade Families,
Welcome to our First Grade class in Room 157! My name is Mrs. Kulkarni and I am really looking forward to meeting this year's First Grade students and their families! This is going to be a year filled with new experiences, discoveries, accomplishments, and fun!
The First Grade team has been planning an exciting year! This is a tremendous year of growth. Students will grow as readers through our Fundations phonics program, through literary discussions, and through instruction at their “just-right” level during Guided Reading. We sharpen our skills as writers through Writers’ Workshop. We will further these ELA skills with our Daily 5 center work. Students will learn about various cultures, communities and friendship through our Social Studies and Open Circle curricula. Students will explore the world around them with our Science curriculum, which is new this year. We will strengthen our number sense and understanding of mathematical concepts through our hands-on Math programs, TERC and AMC.
Please refer to the "Supply List" attached.
I would appreciate it if you would take the time to complete the “Parent Survey” and the “Student Questionnaire.” Feel free to send your completed forms with your child on the first day of school, email it to me, or leave it in my mailbox (in the main office). I want to thank you for your support!
Before school begins on Tuesday, September 8, here are a few things that you might find helpful to know about First Grade:
SNACK: We will have a mid-morning snack each day so students should bring a small, healthy snack that they can have at this time. In order to keep the classroom a safe place for everyone, please do not send in any snacks that contain nuts.
MORNING ARRIVAL: When the first bell rings at 8:10 each morning, students should be lined up with their class at the front doors of the building. For the first few days of school, each First Grade teacher will be holding a sign and standing in front of the area where we would like our class to line up. If for some reason your child is tardy, please have him/her check in at the office before coming to the classroom.
AFTERNOON DISMISSAL: NOTE: Every Tuesday is an early release day and students will be dismissed at 1:00. Dismissal on each of the other days is at 2:30 (not 2:15) this year! First Grade students will exit through the front doors of the school. I will be there to dismiss them and you can pick up your child at this time. I receive a list from TASC outlining which students go to TASC and on which days. If your child has any change to their regular pick up routine, please send me a note indicating the change. If you have a neighbor or relative who often shares pick up duty with you, feel free to send me a blanket note releasing your child into their custody.
I hope that everyone is having a fun and relaxing summer! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know each of the students and their families, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. My email address is [email protected] .
Sincerely,
Diana Kulkarni
